Finance Director

South Portland, Maine

Are you a Finance Director/CFO who would love to make a difference where it counts: in public education? 

As Finance Director you will be the senior financial administrator for a energetic local school district with an annual operating budget of $80 million. In this role, you will provide leadership and strategic direction for all financial operations, including budget development, long-range financial planning, accounting, payroll, purchasing, grants management, and risk management. You will ensure the fiscal integrity and financial health of the School District, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal requirements.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field required. (Master’s degree or CPA preferred).
  • 5+ years of financial management experience (public sector/ governmental /educational work experience preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in budget development, financial reporting, and grant management.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong technical skills with financial software and data analysis tools (experience with Tyler Technologies/MUNIS software preferred)
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations applicable to public education. 

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Lead the development, administration, and long-range financial planning of the School District’s budget.
  • Evaluate financial systems and identify opportunities for improvement and efficiency.
  • Deliver consistent and timely financial reports to support informed decision-making; maintain fiscal transparency
  • Ensure compliance with state, local, and departmental requirements.
  • Oversee key business functions, including accounting, accounts payable, payroll, and purchasing.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of funds through strong internal controls and sound accounting practices.
  • Direct the completion of the School District’s annual external audit.
  • Oversee financial reporting and compliance for federal, state, and private grant programs.
  • Assist with planning and oversight of major capital projects throughout the District.
  • Manage the School District’s insurance portfolio and serves as the point of contact for insurance carriers when needed.
  • Serve as the administrative liaison to the School Board Finance Committee.
  • Support collective bargaining negotiations, as designated by the Superintendent.

Compensation: 
Salary of $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year with generous PTO and benefits.
